Clyde G. Cushing, 56, died Nov. 2, 2008, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born Oct. 17, 1952, in Barre, Vt., the son of Ronald and Margaret (Connor) Cushing Sr.

Clyde worked for Ray Plumbing Co., as a master plumber for 34 years enjoying every day of his job. He was involved as a leader in the Boy Scouts since 1981, where he served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Commissioner, and was awarded the District Award of Merit and Wood badge honor. Clyde was a member of the Senator Hale Hose Co., and Ellsworth Fire Department for nine years and Booshway of the Ancient Ones of Maine black powder re-enactment group

He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Pam of Ellsworth; his mother, Margaret of Washington, Vt.; son, Clyde Cushing II of Ellsworth; daughter, Jodie Cushing and companion, Darren Robinson, of Surry; brothers, George Cushing and wife, Evelyn, of Plainfield, Vt., Ronald Cushing Jr. and wife, Sylvia, of Websterville, Vt., Sidney Cushing and wife, Loretta, of Williamstown, Vt., Kevin Cushing of Barre, Vt., John Paul Cushing and wife, Sandy, of Washington, Vt.; sisters, Donna Bahghart and husband, Mike, of Barre, Vt., Gail Currier and husband, Lee, of Washington, Vt., Peggy Jo Bosley and husband, Stephen, of Springfield, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his canine family, Patches and Oreo.

A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Clyde’s memory may be made to the Grace Ann Robinson Fund, c/o The First, P.O. Box 86, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.   Clyde 'SMOKE SHOULDER' Cushing, passed away this morning loosing his battle with cancer. He will be missed at the campfire and, we'll miss his Dutch oven baking. He'll be there, keeping the camp fire burning for all of us in the future. I'll have more details on his services later.

  I think about Smoke Shoulder every time I cook with cast iron. He taught me the "right" way to clean my pans and I always think about him as do the clean up. Since the only pots and pans we have are cast iron, I think about him every day.
  
  Remember the time he cooked that three tiered wedding cake at the Eastern in Bushy Run? He was so worried about his cakes and getting them all done and then getting the icing on them.
